A Court Stay Cannot Excuse a Constitutional Breach: Sabah’s 40% Must Be Paid

Kota Kinabalu, Wednesday, 8 April 2026

I fully support the firm and principled stance taken by Datuk Seri Azizah Mohd Dun, Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) Wanita Chief, in calling for Sabah’s 40 per cent revenue entitlement to be honoured without further delay. A court-ordered stay must never be used as a justification to weaken political will or delay sincere negotiations.

This issue concerns a constitutional right long owed to the people of Sabah. While legal processes must be respected, they should not become barriers to continued engagement or genuine efforts to reach a resolution. At this stage, prolonged delays reflect not merely procedural constraints, but a deeper failure to prioritise Sabah within the national agenda.

The call to proceed with negotiations is both reasonable and constructive. It is imperative that all parties demonstrate the political will to resolve this matter in good faith, rather than allowing it to be indefinitely prolonged on technical grounds.

A successful payment this year is critical to avoid a recurring or fresh breach of Sabah’s constitutional entitlement.

Sabahans have waited long enough. This is no longer just a policy debate. It is about restoring trust, upholding constitutional commitments, and delivering long-overdue justice to our people.
