Chin calls for action against “AI Phone Farms”, towards a healthier online environment

Kota Kinabalu, Saturday, 23 August 2025:

Recently, social media platforms have seen a surge of fake content generated through the combination of artificial intelligence and so-called “phone farms.” Such content, distributed across large numbers of devices and fake accounts, is used to artificially amplify narratives and has drawn growing public concern.

These operations often show two extremes: either creating divisive and hateful rhetoric, or artificially inflating false information. Common patterns include off-topic comments, irrelevant responses, spam-like promotional messages, and even personal attacks.

Observations indicate that Sabahan online culture is generally reserved, rational, and pragmatic, with netizens tending to focus discussions on the actual issues. This stands in contrast with the inauthentic interactions produced by such manipulative tactics.

These fabricated exchanges not only distort public discourse, but also risk fueling online bullying and misinformation, which pose particular risks to young Sabahans.

The public is urged to strengthen digital literacy, develop the ability to discern genuine information, and remain cautious toward content that is excessively extreme or emotional.

At the same time, regulatory bodies under the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia should step up collaboration with platforms to devise strategies addressing networks of fake accounts and the misuse of generative AI.

Social media account administrators are also encouraged to continue enhancing content moderation systems, reducing the spread of false or malicious content, and safeguarding both the quality of discussions and overall online safety.

Only through the joint efforts of the public, the government, and the platforms can we effectively preserve an authentic and healthy digital space for open dialogue.
