KOTA KINABALU, Tuesday, 17 Dec 2024:
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has been urged to direct the website roketkini.com to remove an image containing elements of provocation and causing fear among the public.
The image in question depicts a commander of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) alongside his team at their camp in Jolo, Sulu, Philippines, following a clash with the Abu Sayyaf group.
However, Roketkini.com has misused the image to suggest that the uniformed forces shown were invaders involved in the Tanduo, Lahad Datu incident.
The image was actually related to the event that happened on 5 February 2013 and has no connection to the Lahad Datu incursion, which occurred on 11 February 2013.
Stephan Gaimin, Organising Secretary of the Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP), emphasised that such misleading information is extremely dangerous.
“An official letter will be sent to MCMC this week,” he stated.
Asraf Amir, SAPP Lahad Datu Youth Chief, who was detained alongside three Al-Jazeera journalists during the news agency’s visit to Tanduo, Lahad Datu in 2013, also confirmed that the image was not taken in Lahad Datu.
Stephen further opined that all media distributors, whether print or digital, must be fully monitored by the MCMC, regardless of their political inclinations.
Roketkini, owned by a political party from Malaya, should apologise for publishing and spreading false information that have caused fear among the people of Sabah, Stephan added.
