Kota Kinabalu, Friday, 6 December 2024:
As Sabah moves towards fully implementing an electronic parking system, it is suggested to adopt the earlier “time-and-punch” mechanism. Similar to the system used by many private parking attached to malls, this method records the start and end times, automatically calculates the total parking fee, and deducts credit from prepaid accounts.
This approach would help prevent citizens from being fined due to forgetting or delaying the extension of their parking time.
The assemblymen and MPs in Kota Kinabalu and Penampang are urged to consider the experiences of citizens, including the inconveniences caused during the coupon parking era, where failing to extend parking time on time resulted in fines.
Transitioning to a “smart parking” system means delegating timekeeping tasks to computers rather than rigidly adhering to the outdated and less humane coupon parking model.
If the Selangor-based supplier appointed by Kota Kinabalu City Hall and Penampang District Council fails to deliver a parking system that suits local needs, the Sabah government is capable of developing its own system.
