KOTA KINABALU, Thursday, 11 June 2026:
Unequivocal support and commendation go to the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), Sabah Contingent led by Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun, for their swift and decisive action against international online scam syndicates seeking to establish a foothold in our State.
The recent operation, known as Ops Pelican, which led to the arrest of 341 individuals and the seizure of sophisticated equipment including satellite receivers, confirms that we are confronting highly organised criminal networks and sends a clear message that Sabah will not tolerate such illicit activities on its soil.
However, this breakthrough also exposes a serious threat: these syndicates, composed primarily of foreign nationals, entered the country on tourist visas and have been operating openly from private bungalows, hotels and apartments for two to three months before detection. By embedding themselves within our residential communities, they have placed our citizens at risk and inflicted reputational damage upon Sabah.
This evil must be nipped in the bud before these syndicates become entrenched, for the longer they operate, the more difficult they become to dismantle. Therefore, the government and all relevant authorities are called upon to provide PDRM with every necessary resource to sustain and intensify these operations to eradicate online fraud syndicates from our shores entirely.
People must be vigilant, report suspicious activities
Law enforcement cannot succeed alone, because these syndicates thrive on anonymity and the silence of those around them. Every Sabahan must remain vigilant, with a special appeal directed to property owners and landlords.
When renting out premises, landlords must conduct proper identity verification and regular property checks. Be alert to tenants who refuse official identification or signed agreements, shun contact with neighbours, or exhibit unusual patterns such as many individuals occupying a single unit with excessive computer equipment.
For all residents, report suspicious activities to the authorities immediately, including a sudden influx of foreign nationals, unusual movements at odd hours, or any abnormal tenant behaviour.
Beyond physical vigilance, public awareness is our first line of defence against falling prey to online scams.
Let us work hand in hand with our police force, for the fight against online scams is a shared responsibility, and together, we will ensure Sabah remains a safe and secure home for all.
