Gee: Free parking at Foh Sang made possible simply by lifting the boom gate

KOTA KINABALU, Monday, Nov 24, 2025:

Gee Tien Siong, the Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) candidate for the Luyang constituency, today unveiled a concrete plan, promising that upon his election, he will immediately open the exit boom gates of the Foh Sang multi-storey car park.

This move aims to implement fully free parking, ensuring this public facility truly benefits the traffic and commercial development of Foh Sang, Bornion Centre, and the wider Luyang area.

Citing data, Gee pointed out that making the Foh Sang multi-storey car park free of charge is entirely within the government’s financial affordability.

KKCD2025 extragavanza can pay 30 years free car parking

It is estimated that the monthly operating cost of the car park is only about RM20,000. By comparison, the huge expenditure for a single large-scale government celebration, such as Kota Kinabalu COUNT DOWN KCD2025 extravaganza, is enough to sustain the daily operations of this car park for up to 30 years.

Rather than spending on temporary grandeur, it is better to let the surrounding residents and merchants benefit long term.

He further analysed that, based on understanding, the current average monthly revenue of the car park is only about RM15,000. If calculated according to the current ‘RM1 per hour, 24/7’ charging system, the vacancy rate of the car park is as high as 90%.

Charging fees leads to idle parking bays, which ironically results in a waste of resources. Once opened for free, it will not only ease surrounding traffic but also allow the public facility to function as intended, bringing in more customers to the Foh Sang and Bornion Centre and injecting commercial vitality.

Gee emphasised that lifting the boom gate is an immediate ‘multi-win solution’: car owners will no longer need to circle around repeatedly searching for cheaper parking, and merchants in Foh Sang and Bornion will gain more customers due to the convenience of parking.

He specifically noted that this move would fully realise the original planning vision of the late Datuk Terence Chong, transforming the car park into an integrated centre serving Luyang residents. While providing free parking, it could also accommodate City Hall service counters, thereby optimising the living experience for citizens.
