Signal Hill pedestrian path disappears,Yong urges reconstruction to reconnect

KOTA KINABALU, Tuesday, 7 October 2025:

Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) President Datuk Yong Teck Lee has received complaints from Signal Hill residents that the original pedestrian pathway has been cut off, making access difficult for the community.

The pathway was an important route for Signal Hill residents to walk to and from the city center, connecting directly to the Kota Kinabalu Community Hall.

During the refurbishment of the Atkinson Clock Tower and the construction of the elevated walkway, this pathway was blocked, forcing residents to climb ropes to go up and down the hill.

Some residents, to avoid danger, had to take much longer detours, which has affected their daily routines.

Upon receiving the complaint, Yong Teck Lee immediately visited the site to understand the situation and arranged for relevant officials to meet with residents for direct discussions.

He urged the authorities to rebuild the bridge section that connects to the Community Hall while improving the new facilities, so that residents can move safely once again.

Yong suggested that the City Hall should ensure a more complete and secure design during reconstruction, especially since the area lies on a landslide-prone slope. The bridge structure must be stable and meet safety standards, with proper drainage to prevent slope erosion.

Yong added that development efforts should balance tourism growth with public convenience, making Signal Hill a safe, smooth, and people-friendly public space.

SAPP will continue to monitor the progress of the path reconstruction and help coordinate with all parties to ensure residents’ safe and convenient access.
